Oakley Sunglasses

Oakley did not start with sunglasses. In 1975, Jim Jannard had three hundred dollars, a garage in Southern California, and an idea for a motorcycle grip made from a rubber compound he called Unobtainium, engineered to grip harder as it got wet. He sold them out of his trunk at motocross events and named the company after his English setter, Oakley Anne. That same material is still on the nose pads and earsocks today, which is why a pair stays put on a humid Florida afternoon when other frames start sliding.

Everything Oakley makes comes out of that engineering-first instinct. Plutonite lens material blocks 100 percent of UVA, UVB, and UVC rays and is built to take a high velocity impact rather than shatter. High Definition Optics corrects the distortion that curved lenses normally introduce at the edges of your vision, a problem most manufacturers simply left alone. And Prizm, introduced in 2015, tunes the lens to a specific environment rather than just darkening everything: Deep Water and Shallow Water for fishing, Road for cycling, Golf for reading the green, Trail for shade and dappled light, plus everyday versions for driving and general wear.
